Devils Top Head Coach Candidate Signs with Maple Leafs
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

As the New Jersey Devils’ head coaching search continues, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ comes to an end. Now that the Maple Leafs have filled their head coach vacancy, eight teams remain in search of a new bench boss.

Maple Leafs General Manager, Brad Treliving, inked 2019 Stanley Cup champion Craig Berube to be the next head coach in Toronto.

Berube was one of the Devils’ top choices. The former St. Louis Blues head coach and Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald reportedly had serious talks for the 58-year-old to become the next head coach in New Jersey.

However, after Toronto fired Sheldon Keefe following yet another first-round exit in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Berube’s interest shifted to the Maple Leafs.

As a result, Keefe has become a top candidate for the Devils’ job, although, reports suggest the former Maple Leafs head coach is undecided on whether or not he wants to jump right back into coaching.

Additional candidates for the Devils’ head coach position — that we know — are Jay Woodcroft and Todd McLellan.

At one point, Woodcroft — former head coach of the Edmonton Oilers — was labeled the leading candidate for the job. As for McClellan, he’s a serious enough candidate that he’s reportedly receiving, or received a second interview.

The additional seven teams searching for a new head coach are the Winnipeg Jets, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken, St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings, and Ottawa Senators.

Kevin Weekes‘ cryptic tweet alluded that the Devils’ decision could be soon as well.
